HUNGARIAN KOMONDORS
Alpha Omega Ranch wouldn't be able to exist as it does without its pack of Komondors! I don't think there is a better multi-purpose guard dog for guarding the ranch and its livestock, protecting me and being a part of the family too.
The Komondor is a very rare, ancient livestock guarding breed used for centuries on the high plains of Hungary. The breed is amazingly smart, fast and agile and does not need a constant patrol to be effective since they are very quick to respond to the sound of trouble. Similar in size to other livestock guard dogs, the Komondor has much more of a presence than the other guard breeds because of its distinguing long, white, corded, adult coat which make it look like a mop or dog with dread-locks. This unique coat is very important to the working Komondor; it lets them blend in with sheep and allows them to work and live in harsh climates like Idaho year round. But, this specialized coat is most beneficial in adding a protective shield against predator attacks. The padding of the adult coat softens blows from bears, mountain lions, and other predators (incl. humans) and protects against teeth and claws. Komondors are smart, t enacious, and fearless as guardians, are very effective against coyotes and have even been known to take on wolves, mountain lions and grizzly bears in protection of their charges! Our dogs have run wolves, coyotoes, cougars and bobcats off. I have found that brother - sister pairs are very effective guarding teams, but if gotten together as pups do require supervision and guidance until they mature.
Unlike many other livestock guard dogs, the
Komondor
is also very devoted and affectionate to its owners in addition to its herd. Komondors are playful and loyal to their family and guard children with special care, making them the perfect guard dog for family and farm alike. Some Koms seem more suited to being left alone to guard livestock, while others crave the love of a human family too. Komondors are not for everyone though and do require special understanding and ownership. Prospective buyers will be screened for suitability.
Alpha Omega's original Komondor stud dog Szenaspusztai Kapitany, “Tokko”, was born in Hungary, of working Hungarian parents and imported to the U.S. in 2005, as a puppy. Tragically, Tokko dies in an accident in the summer of 2008. A number of his pups are living happily and working all over Amrican and overseas well.
We have replaced Tokko with two very large young males Romulus and Kanuk whose parents are both imported from Hugary and hail from champion dogs. We are expecting a litter by Magic and Kanuk due on Christmas 2008.
Our breeding stock includes purebred, show quality Komondors of both working Hungarian and show champion and working American lines. We specialize in breeding extremely large, well-tempered Komondors. All of our dogs are used for predator control and are selected for their personality as well bloodlines and working ability. If you are interested in reserving a puppy from the next litter please contact me!
