At the heart of our various breeding programs for rare breed pigs, sheep, horses, poutlry and dogs lie the two beliefs that you have to start with best to produce the best and that all animals are healthier and happier when raised together in as natural a setting as possible.
I believe that conformational problems and weak bodies most often stem from using inferior animals as breeding stock Just as temperamental problems and vices are a result of unnatural diets, environments and prolonged confinement. For that reason I travel the country and look around the world to obtain the best breeding animals and spend lots of time studying genetics, dietary information, and the principles of biodynamic, polyculture farming. All of the animals here on our family farm interact in such a way as to promote the health of the land and the animals themselves. Those who have read Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma" understand how the interactions of each element of a varied farm has a role to play in disease and parasite control, as well as soil health and environmental and ecological integrity. Our isolated location in a secluded mountain canyon ensures that we do not get toxic run-off or diesease introduction from neighboring ranches. Alpha Omega Ranch means clean air, clean water, clean animals, clean food.
The best resource I have though, is my own eyes and observation. Through my full-time, hands-on management process I can see if my animals are feeling off or need special attention. If something I am doing doesn't work I find out why and change it.
Alpha Omega is not a monoculture industrial factory farm and never sends its animals to feed-lots to get force fed a drug-ridden corn and byproduct filled diet. We do not have herds so large we cannot give every animal some personal attention each day. I try to live and run the ranch as an animal utopia. When you get an animal from Alpha Omega you can rest assured it was bred carefully and cared for well.
